An Austin directory that shows its work

Locally Austin is a small, independent directory of places in central Austin, Texas, organised by neighborhood and by category. It exists because most "best of Austin" pages online are either a decade old, paid for, or written by someone who has never crossed the river. We wanted a page we would use ourselves: the real list of what is in a neighborhood, with a source for every entry and the date we last looked.

What is here

249 places across 12 districts and 8 categories: coffee, tacos, parks, bars and music rooms, bookstores, libraries, swimming spots and farmers markets. Every one of them was pulled from OpenStreetMap and links to its own map record, so you can see who added it and when. The neighborhood introductions and category notes are written by the editorial team; the counts and the listings are generated from the data and rebuilt when it is refreshed.

What is deliberately missing

Star ratings, because we have not visited every place and would not pretend to have. Opening hours, because copied hours go stale in weeks and a wrong "open now" is worse than nothing. Rankings, because "best" on this site means the full, sourced list, independents first. Photos of real places we do not own, because the internet has enough of those. And any listing that was paid for: the partner page explains what businesses can buy, and it is never a place in a list.

Who writes it

The byline on every page is "Locally Austin editorial". There are no invented author profiles, no stock headshots and no claims of a hundred years' combined experience. The people behind the site live in and around Austin, know the districts on foot, and would rather be corrected than be wrong; the editorial policy says how corrections work and how fast we act on them.

Why neighborhoods

Austin is big enough that "in Austin" tells you almost nothing about how far something is. A taco place in the Domain and one on South First are forty minutes apart on a bad afternoon. Organising by district, with a stated center point and radius, makes the lists honest about distance and lets us say plainly when a neighborhood is mostly houses and its good coffee is on the next page over.

If a place is missing, the fastest fix is often to add or correct it on OpenStreetMap itself; we pull from there and your edit will land here on the next refresh.
