One page of counts, all of them derived from the two data files this site is built on: a Census pull for the city and an OpenStreetMap pull for the places. Cite it, quote it, argue with it; the method is at the bottom.

Austin added 14,055 residents between the 2020 count and the 2023 estimate, a 1.5% rise in three years. The twelve districts on this site cover roughly 51 square kilometres of that map if you add up their radii, which is a small fraction of the city's 830 square kilometres of land. They are the dense middle, and the counts below should be read that way.

A linked count means that district and category has its own page (five or more entries). "Indep." is places not tagged with a brand in OpenStreetMap.
What the table says
- East Austin has the most tagged places, 65, which is 26% of everything on the site. Barton Hills has the fewest with 3.
- Adjusted for the size of each district's radius, Rainey Street is the densest at about 16 tagged places per square kilometre; East Austin is next at 8.
- 222 of 249 places (89%) carry no brand tag, our proxy for independent. Among districts with at least 5 places, Rainey Street has the highest independent share at 100% and The Domain the lowest at 67%.
- East Austin has the most parks at 18; parks are 76 of the 249 entries overall.
- 182 places (73%) have a street address in OpenStreetMap. The rest, mostly parks, are shown with a map point.
- 21 district-and-category pairs clear the 5-entry bar for their own page. The largest is parks in East Austin with 18.
Method
Places were pulled from OpenStreetMap through the Overpass API on July 15, 2026 for a bounding box around central Austin, then filtered to 8 tag rules and assigned to the nearest of 12 district center points within each district's radius. Duplicates with the same name and category within about 110 metres were merged. Civic figures are the Census Bureau's 2022 Gazetteer (area, center point) and 2023 population estimates. The full rule list and the center points are on the editorial policy page, and the scripts that produce these numbers are committed alongside the data.
Known limits: OpenStreetMap coverage is uneven, so a district with few entries may simply be under-mapped; radius-based districts overlap real neighborhood identities imperfectly; and the brand tag is an imperfect proxy for whether a place is locally owned.
