Rainey Street is a few blocks long, which makes it the smallest district on this site, and it is also one of the densest. It was a street of small bungalows tucked between downtown and the interstate; over the last fifteen years most of those houses became bars with yards, and the lots between them filled with high-rise apartments and hotels. The street is a historic district, so the remaining houses are protected even as the towers go up behind them.
Because of that history the mix here is heavy on bars and drinking spots, and light on almost everything else. There are more coffee and taco entries than you might expect, most of them in the ground floors of the new buildings or the trailer lot near the south end.
Our radius is only 0.7 km, tight on purpose. The lake trail runs along the south edge, downtown proper is a few blocks west, and East Austin begins on the other side of I-35.
